Most homeowners understand how important a high quality Plumbing System is to the comfort and safety of their residence. Furthermore, everyone that owns a home understands the importance of a well-running water supply and drainage system. But, take it from The Coop, one aspect of homeownership that is often overlooked is the sump pump. Here, I’ll discuss the purpose of having a sump pump for a home and why you should think about having one installed if you experience moisture issues or are at risk of flooding.

What is the Purpose of a Sump-Pump?

Sump pumps are installed in the lowest point of a residential building. They are usually found in basements or a crawl space if the house doesn’t have a traditional cellar. These pumps protect the home from water intrusion. If an incident of flooding were to occur, a sump pump would begin pumping out excess water from the area, helping to keep a basement or crawl space dry.

How Does a Sump-Pump Protect the Home From Flooding?

There are several different types of sump-pumps available on the market, yet most of these units work in the same fashion. Sump pumps are typically attached to a floating switch, also called a pressure switch. When the water reaches a certain level in relation to the pump, the unit will automatically turn on and begin pumping the excess water out of the home and away from the foundation. Once the water no longer triggers the sensor, the sump pump will turn itself off.

Can You Place a Sump-Pump on the Floor?

No. A sump pump will need to be installed in a sump pit, which is dug under the basement flooring or crawl space with its top edge flush with the flooring. The purpose of the pit is to allow the sump pump to begin pumping before water reaches the floor level.

How Else Does a Sump-Pump Protect a Home?

Although the primary purpose of a sump pump is to prevent excess water from entering a home through the foundation, due to flooding from a bad storm or a high water table, it also provides protection against potential water damage emanating from inside the house such as when plumbing fixtures malfunction resulting in leaky water heaters, burst well tanks or broken pipes.

Likewise, metal components that are exposed to water are prone to damage from corrosion. This can include apparatus that is often housed in the basement such as furnaces, air handlers, washer/dryers and even I-beams which serve as the main framework and support of many homes.  A properly installed sump pump can help prevent water from damaging these critical and expensive items.

Mold and mildew pose a direct threat to the health of you and your loved ones. Having a sump pump installed not only prevents flooding, but it reduces the risk of mold and mildew from forming behind walls, soggy carpets, or other hidden areas that are difficult to dry.  Basically, it pumps out water before it comes in contact with vulnerable areas of your home.
